While I was on my yoga mat today with my favorite yoga instructor Adriene (high recommendation here for Yoga with Adriene) I started listening to her words. Specifically about breathing and the various types of breaths that we take.

In Hebrew the word for Soul is Neshama, which has the same root as the word for breath Neshima.

Every morning when I thank G-d for waking up in the morning I thank Him for returning my soul into my body after a good night's sleep.

My mind wandered to the connection between soul and breath. I realize that my soul returns to my body, not by anything that I do, but that once it's in my body, I can nourish and fortify it by giving it and my body the types of breathing that it needs.

Most of my breaths are shallow. Most of my breaths stay within my mouth, throat area. Only when I concentrate do I feel the air entering my lungs or even my stomach. Those are such nourishing breaths. They make me feel good, they make me feel better.

Often I don't realize how thirsty I am until I start drinking. The same with breathing. I don't realize how much I need that air, that oxygen, until I start breathing fully.

And it makes me feel calmer.

And I feel better.

And my actions and reactions are better.

And then so are my relationships.

So, just for today, I'm going to try to breathe consciously. I'm going to try to breathe fully.
